Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. 'Bling Bishop' Lamor Whitehead has been charged with swindling $90,000 from a former parishioner's retirement account. Earlier this year, the bishop was robbed of his flashy jewelry mid-sermon on live television, a highly publicized event that dredged up allegations of fraud that had been following Whitehead for years. The pastor denied his being a villain in a service on Sunday, opting for a more favorable narrative: "Now they're seeing I was anointed by God," he said. However, Whitehead was arrested on Monday morning on charges of fraud, extortion, and lying to authorities. Prosecutors say he solicited money from victims, one of which was a retired parishioner, via threats or false promises of enriching their livelihoods. The bishop has long been known in Brooklyn for his designer suits and luxury vehicles and has even sought higher positions of power in NYC political office and boasts of his alleged friendship with Mayor Eric Adams (who has distanced himself from Whitehead since Monday's events). 2. Uber drivers 'hit the brakes' yesterday in a citywide strike. Drivers across the city are protesting the company's efforts to block a pay hike passed by NYC's Taxi & Limousine Commission. During Monday morning rush-hour, dozens of Uber drivers formed a caravan across the Brooklyn Bridge, sacrificing peak working hours to take a stand against Uber who, just days ago, was granted a temporary restraining order by a New York judge blocking the pay raise that was supposed to take effect yesterday. Drivers have plans to continue their strike and hold more public demonstrations. According to some, they will take their battle to court if public pressure isn't enough to get a judge on their side.
3. The Brooklyn Community Foundation (BCF) has invested $2.5 million into the borough's youth as part of its Invest in Youth initiative (IIY). Hoping to ignite social charge, BCF has distributed its millions among 56 youth-serving organizations. "These long-term investments are amplifying the power of youth voices and the leadership of young people as key players in building a fair and just future for Brooklyn," said Jocelynne Rainey, president and CEO of BCF. Grant recipients of 2022 were selected with a focus on racial justice — 80 percent are led by people of color and 54 percent are Black-led. BCF also made sure to prioritize organizations with smaller operating budgets — 75 percent of recipients' budgets are under $2 million, and 43 percent of budgets are under $1 million. All decision for 2022 recipients were made in collaboration with community members, and initiative is funded by donors and with fees from the foundation's Donor Advised Fund program.
