🌱 An Unlikely Marriage + Climate Education + Turkey Day Giveaways
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

Hey, everybody. It's Saturday in Brooklyn and I'm back in your inbox to get you caught up on the most important things happening locally, including updates on:
- Devastated parents of NYC tourist appear in court to defend their son
- A Brooklyn teacher inspiring the next generation of climate activists
- Local weekend finds to make Thanksgiving that much better 🦃
But first, today's weather:
🌤 Mostly sunny, breezy and cold. High: 42 Low: 32.
Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Sitting on the stoop of his Bushwick Airbnb, a 20-year-old tourist was killed by a stray bullet to the chest. Yesterday, his parents showed up to court demanding justice for their son. Ethan Williams was visiting New York for the very first time when he was caught in the crossfire of a Brooklyn shooting in October 2020. Williams' parents faced their son's alleged killer in court on Friday, trying to make sense of why Ethan was taken from them. The 26-year-old suspect was arrested two weeks ago; he was arraigned and pled not guilty, although allegedly admitted he shot at Williams' group because he mistakenly thought one of them was responsible for his cousin's death a few weeks prior.
2. Stray bullet strikes MTA bus struck full of passengers in Canarsie, according to police. On Friday, the bus was struck close to noon at East 103rd Street and Glenwood Road. Thankfully, neither the driver nor any of the passengers were injured. Four shell casings were found at the scene and the gunman fled in a gray Infinity, police said.
3. Dollar vans in Brooklyn and Queens just got a whole lot greener. Replacing NYC's current models of gas-powered dollar vans is a brand new, entirely electric fleet. The program, called the Clean Transit Access Program (CTAP), received a $10 million award from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to electrify the fleet of alternative transportation vehicles for Brooklyn and Queens. Used throughout the city, dollar vans are an essential alternative in transportation desserts. Privately owned companies like Dollaride, Blocpower, HEVO and Build Edison are in collaboration under CTAP to completely electrify the highly relied-upon mode of transport.
4. 'The Gett,' a play about Jewish divorce, was made possible by the unlikely coupling of a Brooklyn synagogue and a West Village theater company. Rattlestick Theater, which specializes in "diverse, challenging, and provocative" works, teamed up with Park Slope's Rabbi Matt Green who wanted to expanding programming for "cultural Jews" who don't necessarily feel connected to a particular denomination, yet actively want to embrace Judaism and be Jewish, nonetheless. Rattlestick's artistic director Daniella Topol and Rabbi Green were introduced in 2018 and, rather unconventionally, decided to put on a play together. Thus 'The Gett: Or How a Woman Created Herself,' a 95-minute, off-Broadway original play produced by Congregation Beth Elohim and showing at the Rattlestick through Dec. 11.

5. A Brooklyn teacher is fighting the tides of misinformation, leveraging climate education to inspire her students to take climate activism one step at a time. Sarah Slack has been teaching in the New York City public school system for 14 years. When she heard that a teacher had told students that Pluto "exploded," she thought, "Kids deserve access to better science information than that!" Slack, on the city's Climate Education Leadership Team, is working with colleagues to buff up the climate and science education offered in NYC public schools. In Borough Park, Brooklyn where Slack has taught for the past six years, she's developed a climate-focused STEM curriculum that involves hands-on learning. Slack hopes to show her students that they don't need to save the whole world all at once; instead, they can make a big difference just helping out in their communities.
