Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. New video footage of a man who was hit and dragged to death by police raises alarm: Were the officers distracted by a soccer match while driving and fail to notice before it was too late? In April, Ronald Anthony Smith of Brooklyn lost his life when two police officers in a speeding police van hit and dragged him 35 feet to his death. Newly released body camera footage shows one of the officers clutching a phone playing video of what appears to be a player on a soccer field. Smith's family are concerned that their loved one lost his life because NYPD officers were distracted by the match while driving. Additional videos show the NYPD van flashing emergency lights, blasting through two red lights on Eastern Parkway at Buffalo and Rochester avenues, and one officer performing CPR on Smith with a single hand — his other hand busy making a phone call.

2. FDNY firefighter William Moon continued to save lives after his tragic death. Last week, the firefighter, husband, and father of two died after suffering severe head trauma in a rescue training accident. However, even after his death, Moon managed to save the lives of five other people through organ donation. Yesterday, LiveOnNY, a nonprofit that helps people like Moon live on through organ and tissue donation, confirmed that the firefighter's heart, lungs, liver and kidneys saved the lives of five patients, including three people in New York.

3. "You're off to great places!" One of Brooklyn's very own bakers is competing to win a new 'Dr. Seuss Baking Challenge.' Joyce Osorio of Brooklyn is competing on an unscripted television series that invites the country's best bakers to step into the world of Dr. Seuss, using limitless imaginations to craft jaw-dropping creations. Nine teams of two compete for a grand prize of $50,000. At the link, listen to Osorio talk about the show!

4. Brooklyn Children's Theater's unique approach to arts education just got a $57,400 grant from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Mayor Eric Adams Administration. BCT's unique approach to social and emotional learning is one deeply rooted in the equity-focused nature of their musical theatre programming. The grant will help the Gowanus-based company provide 53 classes for the 2022-2023 year across Mainstage, Weekend, Summer, and Technique classes, featuring partial and full scholarships to students in need. BCT received the Cultural Development Fund Grant in large part because of the organization's commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging by expanding partial-scholarship and free programming for communities that have been historically excluded from the arts. The company aims to break down power structures often found in theatre-arts education programs, structures that more often than not cater to economically privileged students.

Although perhaps not the easiest hobby to pick up, this Brooklyn studio is offering classes to make the glass making more accessible: "Shiny Sparkle Labs is the creation of Dorie Gutherie and Matthew Day Perez, both of whom are art educators and formally trained in the glassmaking space. They both attended the University of Illinois and found themselves both in New York City years later." Learn more at the link and sign up today! (AMNY)
