Fifth of All NYC August Shootings Traced to East Flatbush, Brownsville and East New York

The NYPD precincts covering East Flatbush, East New York and Brownsville accounted for 21 percent of shootings in August.

EAST NEW YORK and BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN — The NYPD has nearly 80 precincts, but just three in eastern Brooklyn were responsible for 21 percent of the shootings in New York City this August.

The statistic was highlighted Tuesday by NYPD Chief of Operations Dermot Shea at the department's monthly crime briefing.

Shea linked the 21 percent number to the NYPD's 67th Precinct, which patrols East Flatbush, the 73rd, which patrols Brownsville and Ocean Hill, and the 75th, which patrols East New York.

Between Aug. 1 and Aug. 28, the NYPD recorded 135 shootings with 162 victims, according to official statistics, down from 107 shootings with 148 victims during the same period in 2015.

Now, here are the statistics for the three precincts Shea cited, again applying to Aug. 1 through Aug. 28:

  • The 67th: 11 shootings with 12 victims (up from 5 shootings and 6 victims last year)
  • The 73rd: 7 shootings with 8 victims (down from 12 shootings with 17 victims last year)
  • The 75th: 9 shootings with 9 victims (three more shootings than last year, but 7 fewer victims)
  • August, 2016 totals: 27 shootings with 29 victims

Shea said the shootings in the precincts can often be linked to specific streets, describing a situation of "localized conditions that are driving violence."

Those conditions, he added, are often linked to gang feuds.
