NYC City Council Election District 42: Candidates, Polling Places And More

Everything you need to know to vote in Tuesday's primary election in East New York.

EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN — Voters in Brownsville, Canarsie and East New York will head toward the polls on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to cast their votes in this year's Democratic primary.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and public advocate Letitia James will be on the ballot, as well as several candidates vying to become the next Brooklyn District Attorney. In East New York, Inez Barron is defending her seat as city council representative for District 42, which covers East New York and parts of Brownsville and Canarsie.

District 42 City Council Candidates

Inez Barron is the incumbent in this race and has represented District 42 since 2014. Barron chairs the Committee on Education and vice co-chairs the Black, Latino/a, and Asian Caucus. Barron replaced her husband Charles, who served 12 years as the district’s representative.

Mawuli K. Hormeku, Barron’s only Democratic challenger, runs Nehemiah Economic Development, Inc., a non-profit organization founded by his father that provides scholarships to local students. Hormeku also sits on Community Board 16 as a member of the Land Use, Planning & Zoning, Youth Service Planning, Economic Development, Health and Human Services and Senior Citizen Affairs committees.

Where to Vote

There are polling places across the district; your specific one depends on where you live. To find your polling place, click here and enter your address. You need to be registered as a Democrat at that address to vote in the primary.

After entering your address on that same website above, under "Primary Election - 09/12/2017," click "Ballot Information" then choose your party. You will see your choices for all available offices.

When Can I Vote?

The elections take place on Tuesday, September 12. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
