Pedestrian Killed In Brownsville Crash Identified, Driver Charged (UPDATE)
Police say they received a call of a car driving "erratically" on Powell Street Saturday night.
BROWNSVILLE, NY — A 21-year-old man was killed and five others injured when a car "driving erratically" on Powell Street struck a pedestrian before losing control and striking several other parked vehicles, according to the NYPD.
Just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday, police say they received a call about a black Infiniti that was going northbound on Powell Street and was "driving erratically." The car struck a pedestrian before losing control and striking several other vehicles, the NYPD said. Police say the crash took place in the area of Glenmore Avenue and Powell Street.
The 21-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. He was identified as Brownsville resident Michael Joefield.

At least five others were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the driver of the car fled the scene but the passenger in the vehicle was detained. As of Sunday morning, an NYPD spokesman said a person of interest had been apprehended. The driver was identified as Terrance Smith, a 37-year-old Ohio resident.

Smith has been charged with DWAI and leaving the scene of an accident.
