Building on the Mayor Summer Youth Program, the initiative aims to keep young Buffalonians working, supported by counselors, and directly involved in shaping how their city works.
2. Erie County working to transform how mental health emergencies are handled (wkbw.com) — Erie County is rolling out new ways to handle mental health and substance use crises so fewer Buffalo-area residents end up in jail or crowded ERs. Through the Crisis to Care Collaborative, 911 screening is improving, mobile crisis teams are expanding, and a 24/7 BestResponse stabilization center on Niagara Street in Buffalo now offers another place to get immediate help.
3. Tonawanda supervisor proposes tax increase in 2027 town budget (wivb.com) — Town of Tonawanda's supervisor is proposing a 3.9% tax levy increase for 2027, arguing it's needed to keep services running amid high inflation and rising labor costs. For residents just north of Buffalo, the plan exceeds the 2% tax cap but is framed as a way to avoid much steeper hikes later, with workshops set for October.
4. Highmark, Buffalo Bills Foundation unveil Victory Table initiative (wivb.com) — A new Victory Table food truck backed by Highmark and the Buffalo Bills Foundation will soon start bringing free hot meals, wellness resources, and education directly into underserved Buffalo and Western New York neighborhoods. Local ecologist Katie Costanzo urges homeowners to rethink fall cleanup, since leaving some leaves and plant material can provide vital winter habitat for pollinators your garden depends on.
