Today's riddle: Why did the cookie go to the hospital? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. 'Violent criminals knew we were out there': FBI, BPD credit summer initiative for drop in violent crime (wkbw.com) — Buffalo police and the FBI say their joint Operation Summer Heat helped cut overall violent crime by 8% through September, even as shootings remained a serious concern. Teams focused on hotspots across the city, making multiple gun and drug seizures and promising to keep surging resources whenever crime spikes, which could influence safety in many Buffalo neighborhoods going forward.
2. 'Think big': Buffalo wins legal battle over Templeton Landing, opening door to redevelopment (wkbw.com) — Buffalo has secured legal ownership of the Templeton Landing site, clearing the way for a major reimagining of that high-profile waterfront property and its large parking lot. City leaders want residents to "think big," envisioning mixed-use development, public green space, and a broader transformation of Erie Basin Marina that could reshape how locals live, work, and relax along the water.
3. Help Build the Strawberry Islander (buffalorising.com) — Students in and around Buffalo can now drop into the Buffalo Maritime Center's free "BMC After 3" program to help build the historic Strawberry Islander boats and other hands-on projects. The initiative revives a uniquely Buffalo boat design, teaches STEM and craftsmanship, and will eventually launch the new boats on Hoyt Lake, giving local kids a direct connection to the region's maritime history.
4. 3 injured in dump truck crash on I-990 (wivb.com) — A Buffalo woman and two other drivers suffered minor injuries after a Thursday morning crash on Amherst's I-990, where two cars collided and were then struck by a dump truck that flipped and spilled crushed stone. Amherst Police are still investigating and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call 716-689-1311, an important request for Buffalo-area commuters who use that route.
5. Erie County warns parents after 7 infant deaths linked to unsafe sleep environments (wkbw.com) — Erie County health officials in Buffalo are warning parents after seven infants under six months died in sleep-related incidents in the last two months, mostly within the county. Families here are urged to follow the ABCs of safe sleep, avoid co-sleeping or soft bedding, and use layers or wearable blankets to keep babies warm safely as colder weather approaches.
