Memorial Day Commemoration in Carroll Park
Locals gather to remember neighborhood heroes.

Organized by our own neighborhood treasure, Joanny D’Amico, and the Court Smith Street BID in coordination with the Friends of Carroll Park, local veterans and neighbors gathered in Carroll Park this morning to pay tribute to all members of the military who have served our country and most especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Joanny led the crowd in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and she was followed by local resident and Sacred Hearts/St. Stephen choir member, Michael Manus, who sang both the “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.” SHSS Pastor Monsignor Guy Massie delivered an ecumenical invocation and speeches by local officials followed, some with their own poignant memories, and all with relevant messages to always remember and always honor those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy.
The moving ceremony culminated with several veterans laying flowers in front of the World War I monument in the center of Carroll Park and the playing of “Taps.” Joanny then invited all assembled to join her and her husband, Francis D’Amico, in walking to the corner of Court and Carroll Streets where a memorial to another local hero is located. It has become the custom of this annual memorial service to also lay flowers at the stone commemorating the dedication of the Carroll Park ball field to Firefighter Louis Valentino, Jr. who was killed in the line of duty in February 1996. In attendance were FF Valentino’s beloved mother, Phyllis, and his aunt, Linda Masi.
