A Dutch Cargo Bike Soon To Serve Brooklynites Piston Lever-Made Espresso Drinks

XXX Coffee is a Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn-based coffee company that currently serves espresso and pour over drinks one day a week in Long Island City. Currently endorsed by the City of New York’s Business Solutions agency for their Kickstarter campaign, Drew DeGeer, XXX Coffee’s owner, explains why New Yorkers would benefit from drinking his coffee.

“Coffee keeps New Yorkers productive, and I like to think of our coffee as the working man’s fuel,” says DeGeer. He has dedicated the last 22 years to the coffee industry, mentored by the late Giacomo Zuccarini, a Toronto-based Gaggia importer and espresso machine expert. DeGeer is a World Barista Championship technical judge, and judges regional competitions for the Specialty Coffee Association of America. “We only use piston lever espresso machines, which produces, in my opinion, the best espresso, and are the hardest and most intricate machines to learn and serve espresso from. And I want to serve our coffee from a low-impact, no emissions-producing Dutch cargo bike on the streets of New York.”

The bike’s wooden cargo area will be locally rebuilt and retrofitted by a local New York craftsman, explained DeGeer. He also plans to locally roast his coffee in Red Hook, Brooklyn, at the Pulley Collective.

Lastly, at 47 years, DeGeer is an older barista. The average age of baristas in Italy is between 45-48 years old, unlike their younger counterparts in the United States, whose average age is 26.

“I am a pro barista. I am older. I have credentials. That is my profile. So you know I’m the best of the best,” says DeGeer with a grin.
