
Communal Table hosts a monthly series of explorations into the ways people create community through food. Each event will encourage sharing stories, teaching techniques and tasting. Organizers aim to foster mindfulness of the ways cooking and eating are communal acts.

Communal Table #1: Stone Soup | Sunday, February 27, 2011, 4-6:30 pm
A family event featuring a reading of variations of the folktale — Stone Soup. Participants can bring an ingredient, a family recipe (and a story) to add to a stone broth. Kids and adults design a personalized cover for a ‘cook book’ of soup recipes shared that day.

Communal Table # 2: Covered Dish | Wednesday, March 30, 2011 6:30-9:30 pm
Participants are invited to explore (and taste) the history and traditions of the “covered dish”. What are the different traditions around the world? Can they be tasty without canned cream soup? Half a dozen ceramic artists will provide a hand-made “covered dish” for chefs to fill.
Communal Table #3: Sing For Your Supper | Wednesday, April 27, 2011, 6:30-9:30 pm
Five singers singing two songs each accompanied by five ‘small plates’ that reflects each singers style. The focus will be on planting songs, songs about resurrection, and foods that mark this seasonal juncture (eggs, sprouts and seeds, etc.)

Communal Table #4: Pickles and Roots | Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 6:30-9:30 pm.
An evening devoted springtime food traditions and pickling possibilities, like rhubarb, ramps and mushrooms. Participants will taste pickles from around the world, make jars of refrigerator pickles to take home, and share stories about preserved foods’ role in ethnic and social roots.
Communal Table #5: Counter Culture | Wednesday, June 22, 2011, 6:30-9:30 pm
An evening of kitchen gadget experimentation exploring the relationship of design forms and flavor function — inspired by “Counter Space” an exhibit at MOMA closing May 7, 2011. Experiece how different tools inform recipes. We will dice, shred, puree, toast, waffle, etc.
Communal Table #6: Flavors of Chance | Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 6:30-9:30 pm
Participants pick random cards from a hand-made deck of cards. Each card lists a different food or flavor and each “hand” contains unique combinations. Presenters will lead a discussion about choice, chance and who decides what we get to eat, linking to broader questions of food policy.
