Presented as a discourse delivered by the Buddha toward the end of his life, the Lotus Sutra is one of the most influential scriptures within Mahayana literature. In this retreat, participants will examine central Mahayana Buddhist beliefs and practices that are described in the Lotus Sutra and the wider role of this text in the religious culture of East Asia. They will examine the material and ritual forms through which this Indian text was produced, reproduced, interpreted, embodied, and enacted in a wide range of Japanese Buddhist traditions.
