Thomas Von Essen (SFC ’72), is a former New York City Fire Commissioner. Von Essen served for 30 years with the Fire Department of New York City. He first served in the South Bronx Ladder Co. 42, then as Union President from 1993 - 1996, and, ultimately, Commissioner from 1996 – 2001. He was Fire Commissioner on 9/11, and he will discuss he thoughts about that day and the response from the Fire Department and other city agencies.
