Gowanus United Opposes Parole Mega-Site
Coalition fighting borough-wide parole facility in the heart of Gowanus has been renamed Gowanus United and urges community involvement.

Gowanus United, a group of local residents, businesses, artists and activists, is mobilized to fight the state’s proposed opening of a borough-wide parole facility to be located at 2nd Avenue and 5th Street, in the heart of the Gowanus neighborhood.
While the group supports the re-entry into society of ex-offenders, it opposes that this proposed facility, slated to open in January 2015, will serve the entire parolee population of Brooklyn. That would include 6,000 parolees with 300-400 parolees reporting to the facility each weekday. The state, without any advance notice to or regard for the residents, businesses, or schools already in Gowanus, has decided to consolidate the three presently used centers presently existing in Brooklyn into one huge, sprawling facility. The group feels multi-site facilities would be far more equitable than a borough-wide site in a single neighborhood.
Gowanus United is urging community members to TAKE ACTION and to GET INVOLVED to stop this facility from opening. A mobilization meeting was held on Thursday, October 23 at Al-Madinah School, 383 3rd Ave. at 5th St to discuss updates and future steps. Further action may be taken by signing the petition below and calling Governor Cuomo to share your thoughts about this plan.
