Maternity Wear Gets Skinny

Madison Rose lays out their second season of super stretch maternity jeans.

There are plenty of maternity products one could imagine as having a cult following – products that expectant mothers all want, need and love to buy in the months leading up to giving birth.

But the item flying off the shelves isn’t always what you would expect.

At designer maternity re-sale boutique , the hot item is super stretch skinny jeans.

Yes, you heard correctly, pregnant women are lusting after maternity skinny jeans.

Madison Rose owners Jilian and Chris Dichiaro first began selling their line of denim skinny jeans last year, and to much success. Just a week ago, the current season’s eagerly anticipated stock hit the shelves.

“We really listen to our customers,” Jilian said as she walked through the stacks of Madison Rose skinny jeans, which look just like your classic high-end, sexy fitting jean, save the elasticized maternity panel.

Their customers said the battle of the belly bulge is in fact two battles: one being the obvious need for comfortable maternity wear (and let’s face it, pants are nice to have in a New York winter), the other being the desire to stay fashionable and chic even as your belly grows.

Or more specifically and to the point, women still want to “feel like themselves.” They want cute jeans. And they want to be comfortable, too.

Chris Dichiaro had a lot of contacts in manufacturing and denim, so the couple began sourcing out great super stretch denim to be converted to over-the-belly maternity jeans. Each pair of skinny jeans sells for just $69.

“It’s all about keeping our costs low for our customers,” Jilian explained.

The dark blue denim jeans were such a hit last season that they began producing black denim jeans, too. This season, they are adding gray to the collection, as well as a straight leg denim jean and a black trouser pant.

But not all of the Dichiaros’ skinny-jeans-buying clientele are women looking to hold on to their pre-pregnancy skinny jean “look.”

“More than fifty percent of the time people who don’t ordinarily wear skinny jeans walk out the door with a pair,” says Jilian. Sometimes they even walk out wearing them, she added.

Though women are sometimes hesitant, tossing off a reluctant, “Oh I couldn’t possibly wear those” attitude, Jilian encourages customers to try a new look. With such significant changes to the shape of your body, she said, what looks good - and what feels good - changes, too.

In fact, skinny jeans look quite marvelous with pregnancy proportions. To boot, customers find their soft stretch delightfully comfortable.

In addition to Madison Rose skinny jeans, you will also find a wide variety of re-sale designer jeans, which have been converted to maternity jeans. Woman can sell their regular Rock and Republic, AG, 7 for all mankind, Paige, Citizens and Joes jeans to Madison Rose, who will then put them back on the shelf after a “maternity” transformation. How much will a pair of designer maternity jeans cost you? Only $90. (A drop in the bucket in comparison to their usual $200-$300 price tag.)

But don’t expect to find the Dichiaro’s skinny jeans in resale. So far, no one who has bought them is willing to let them go.
