Middle School Day Camps at Beam Center
Weeklong camps for middle schoolers in tech and digital design.
Beam Center is thrilled to offer a series of week-long day camps for middle schoolers this summer! The camps are led by the fabulous Nancy Otero, Beam Center’s resident digital fabrication expert. These camps are for students entering grades 6-8 next fall. Each camp runs 10am to 3pm, and the cost is $400. Tuition assistance is available.
August 3-7: Laser Cutter Structures
Design and construct fractal or modular structures using the laser cutter and generative design. Participants will build at least two individual modular structures with different materials of their choice: paper, cardboard, wood, textiles or acrylic. Those structures can be used as lamps, computer or cellphone holders, bowls, plant support, or decoration. At the end of the workshop students will build a big structure as a final project.

August 24-28: Data Visualization
Learn how to create beautiful, powerful data visualizations through Processing. Participants will use sensors, machine learning, or fashion to create a final project. Basic experience using java, Processing, Arduino, Python or any other programing language is useful.

August 31-Sept 4: Laser Cutter Wearables Lab
Learn how to use the laser cutter to create beautiful jewelry and fashion garments. During the laser cutter wearables participants will build at least four individual and inspired-connected wearables such as jewelry (rings, earrings), clothes, shoes, and accessories (wallets, purse, cellphone holder) with different materials: wood, paper, textiles and acrylic. Participants will present their projects during a gift session at the end of the workshop.
Age Range: Open to kids entering grades 6 through 8.
