has been wowing customers with its smoked meats, pastries, and poutine ever since it opened on Hoyt Street in January 2010. Eating at the Montreal-Jewish deli is usually a big commitment—strong flavors and artery clogging ingredients are delightfully dominant on the menu.
Yet during my most recent visit, I discovered that Mile End’s food can also be simple and easy. They were out of my favorite breakfast item—the smoked meat hash—so I opted for a breakfast sandwich of bacon, egg, and quebec cheddar on rye.
The rye was homemade, the eggs were just a little runny, and the cheddar was melty, but what made the sandwich great was the bacon. Cured in house, like all of Mile End’s meats, it was thick, crunchy, and perfectly cooked.
