The Best Thing We Ate This Week

Spicy Vegetable Sandwich at Brooklyn Bread Cafe

After all the heavy eating that inevitably takes place over the holidays, I've found myself craving fresh produce and lighter ingredients, like vinaigrettes, farmers cheeses, and light breads.

Maybe that's why the Spicy Vegetable sandwich at immediately caught my eye. No meat, just a ton of vegetables: arugula, artichoke hearts, grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers and hot cherry peppers. That topped with fresh mozzarella, balsamic vinegar and Tuscan olive oil is sure to be a refreshing meal.

The sandwich far surpassed my expectations. For one, it is gigantic, with the vegetables stuffed between two thick slices of delicious ciabatta bread. The balsamic is decidedly sweet, as are the roasted red peppers and artichoke hearts. The arugula and hot cherry peppers are the only spicy ingredients, and they leave a satisfying burn after each bite. The fresh mozzarella is, well, fresh mozzarella - a wonderfully creamy, buttery addition to any sandwich.

The meal is huge and extremely filling. For any skeptics that claim that meat is the only way to fill a belly, the thick bread and eggplant were perfect replacements for cold cuts.

At $9, this is a slightly pricier sandwich, but rest assured, you will feel rejuvenated and full once the meal is finished.
