EASTPORT, NY — A mama duck was able to get her nine babies back safely after the brood was stuck in a storm drain recently.

According to the Eastport Fire Department, a call came in at 6:21 p.m. Friday to both firefighters and the Suffolk County Police Department regarding an animal rescue on Encore Boulevard in Eastport.

Eastport Fire Chief Mike Tortorice and Assistant Chief Joseph Tortorice, along with SCPD Officer Chris Miron, arrived on the scene "to find 9 baby ducks stuck in a storm drain with the mother duck watching them closely," fire officials said.

As officers arrived, the storm drain was opened and fire department members were able to rescue all 9 baby ducks; fire department ducks reunited them with their relieved mama and her brood of ducklings waddled off happily.

Coincidentally and perhaps prophetically, the Eastport Fire Department nicknamed "The Flying Ducks."

A relocation team transported the ducks to Wildwood Lake as a "safe haven," fire officials said.

Resident Elyse Weissman applauded the heroes involved in the rescue. "The firefighters were wonderful," she said.
