Center Moriches School District celebrated academic achievement and character this fall as students at both the high school and middle school were inducted into their schools’ honor societies. Center Moriches High School welcomed 41 students into its chapter of the National Honor Society, while Center Moriches Middle School welcomed 35 eighth graders into its chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.

At the high school, the new members were recognized for their dedication to the National Honor Society’s four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service and character. The inductees show a strong commitment to their studies and to making a difference in their school and community. Their selection reflects both their achievements in the classroom and the example they set for their classmates.

The high school ceremony featured a keynote address by Katie Ross, who spoke to the inductees about the responsibilities and opportunities that come with membership. The chapter is guided by advisor Maggie Romaine, who organized the ceremony and supports members throughout the year.

At the middle school, the National Junior Honor Society ceremony was an evening dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of the eighth grade inductees. National Junior Honor Society chapters in middle schools across the country work to give practical meaning to the society’s five goals: scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. Membership is never based on grades alone, and the organization seeks to recognize the whole student, one who excels in every one of these areas. To be selected, Center Moriches Middle School students needed a cumulative average of 90 percent or higher, along with demonstrated leadership, service, character, and citizenship, as shown through their activities and written recommendations.

“Membership in the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society is a reflection of hard work, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving others,” said Dr. Ricardo Soto, Superintendent of Schools. “I congratulate our inductees and thank the families, teachers, and staff who have supported them along the way. These students make our entire community proud.”
