Fire Breaks Out At Home On Montauk Highway In Moriches Thursday: Police

MORICHES, NY — A fire broke out at a home in Moriches Thursday, officials said.

According to Suffolk County police, Seventh Precinct officers responded to a house fire located on Montauk Highway in Moriches at 5:17 p.m.

No one was inside the home at the time of the fire, police said.

According to Mastic Fire Department Chemical Company #1 on their Facebook page: "This evening at 5:18 p.m. the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a reported residential structure fire on Montauk Highway.

"Upon arrival of Assistant Chief Rudy M. Sunderman, he found smoke showing and fire through the roof in the rear. A working fire was declared and mutual aid departments were activated."

The first arriving engine stretched a line and went into extinguish the fire; shortly after, a back-up line was stretched to front door, officials said.

The Center Moriches Fire Department arrived and "hit the hydrant on Montauk Highway," officials said.

The East Moriches Fire Department and Manorville Fire Department arrived with a engine crew to assist with search and overhaul, officials said.

The Brookhaven and Eastport Fire Department served as Rapid Intervention Teams and the Mastic Beach Fire Department stood by at headquarters; Shirley Community Ambulance, the Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company and the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company did rehab, officials added.

"Thank you to all our mutual aid and ambulances companies for assistance," the post said. "Thank you to the Mastic fire police for blocking off Montauk Highway to secure scene safety. All members were back in service in approximately two hours. Great job by all our members and thank you for responding. The Mastic Fire department is always ready to serve."

Traffic was snarled while first responders battled the blaze, motorists reported.
