Greek Bites Gives Back To Hospital Workers Fighting Coronavirus

MORICHES, NY —For years, Greek Bites Grill & Cafe, a family business in Moriches, has been serving up delicious gyros, salads, soups and specialties such as pastitsio and moussaka made with love.

And now, the family that pours their hearts into the business decided to give back to the front line workers fighting the new coronavirus.

"Today was a special day here for us at Greek Bites," Marianna Laopodis wrote on Facebook. "My family and I reached out to Long Island Community Hospital and together we planned a donation of over 30 salads, 25 sandwiches, and 30 soups to feed the nurses, doctors and any other staff tirelessly working the front line with COVID-19 patients."

For vegans and vegetarians, vegetable soups, salads without meat, and "our famous falafel pitas" were also on the menu, she said.

"In these hard times, although we have to practice our safe distancing we must look out for each other and help whoever we can," Marianna said.

Despite the struggle by many businesses during the days of coronavirus, Dimitra Laopodis, Marianna's mother, said giving back means everything.

"During times like these we are truly blessed to be able to still remain open as a take out business," she said. "The least we could do is to give back something in return — especially to those who are dealing with this horrible virus on the front lines, such as nurses, doctors, and ambulance crews."

The family also tries, on a daily basis, to give out lunch or dinner to police officers who might stop by the store, Dimitra said.

"From our family to yours, our wish is that you are staying safe and healthy," Marianna said.
