WFHS Medical Assisting Students Collaborate With Elementary Students

William Floyd High School senior medical assisting students, part of the district’s robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings, recently visited fifth-grade students at Moriches Elementary School in a special collaboration that featured interactive activities and presentations on the marvels of the human body and blood donations.

Medical assisting students honed their skills for their prospective future careers by working closely with the younger students on various activities including preparing first aid kits, participating in a medical headband game, medical bingo, word matching medical terms, Pictionary, hangman, “pin the organs on the body,” operation, proper stethoscope use and teaching the fifth graders how pinpoint and calculate their heart rates.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for a cross-curricular activity involving different education levels,” said Jason McKay, William Floyd High School medical assisting teacher. “Our medical assisting students were able to not only practice their skills but become educational leaders. The elementary students experienced and learned about health care professions and participated in one of our CTE [programs for the day].”

The following week, Moriches Elementary School fifth grade students, as part of the Little Doctors program, hosted a blood drive that garnered 38 pints of blood, potentially impacting 114 people as one pint of blood can help save up to three lives. With the assistance of the Moriches Elementary School PTO and the New York Blood Center, the Little Doctors ran the blood drive so Moriches Elementary parents/guardians and the community were able to give the gift of life by donating blood.
