Nov. 16, 2021

Ms. Donna Scalfani's eighth grade “social media & society” classes at William Floyd Middle School were recently motivated to take action by today’s current events regarding Instagram’s prolonged effect on teens. Students analyzed an article on the topic in the The Wall Street Journal, which details the correlation between social media and self-esteem. With their findings, the eighth graders partnered up with school counselor Ms. Taylor Buckley and the sixth grade English department to promote positive self-talk in the halls of William Floyd Middle School.

“Connecting the upper classmen with the lower classmen was a great way to get that peer-to-peer connection we need to make an impact in our halls," said Ms. Buckley. The eighth graders wrote letters to sixth graders expressing the importance of practicing positive self-talk. The sixth graders then decorated mirrors that promote positive affirmations they and fellow members of the student body can see and tell themselves daily. “This display is prominently placed near the cafeteria doors so students can see uplifting thoughts each day as a reminder of how amazing they are!” added Ms. Scalfani.
