NEW YORK CITY — Severe thunderstorms and damaging winds could lash parts of New York City on Monday, bringing frequent lightning, heavy downpours and potential flash flooding, forecasters at the National Weather Service warn.
According to the National Weather Service, the scattered, quick-moving storm will sweep across the region, mainly after 5 p.m. on Monday, potentially slicking the roads and interrupting the evening commute.
The National Weather Service is giving the storm a "marginal" chance of severity, which is the first of five levels in its warning system. The storms are likely to be scattered across the city, according to the latest models.
Along with potential flash flooding, severe thunderstorms may bring strong winds, which forecasters said are the two primary threats.
"One more chance at heat indices exceeding 95F today before things get a little cooler later this week," forecasters at the National Weather Service said. "We're also anticipating a round of thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. Some storms could bring damaging winds and heavy rain."
New York City's rainfall will be on the outskirts of a severe storm developing in the Midwest and stretching all the way to Chicago, according to AccuWeather.
The storm will peter out in New York City by early Tuesday morning, bringing clear weather and a welcome dip in temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.
Otherwise, expect hot and humid weather Monday into the evening, with highs in the upper 80s and "feels-like" temperatures in the upper 90s. Monday evening lows are in the high 70s, and a Heat Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m.

Monday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
Monday night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 77. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. West wind 9 to 11 mph.
Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 74. North wind 6 to 9 mph.
