The First-Ever Citywide Book Club Kicks Off This Summer

The New York Public Library is giving the whole city a book to read together this summer.

CENTRAL PARK — Read a book with your fellow New Yorkers this summer as part of the New York Public Library's first-ever city-wide book club.

The book, called The City We Became by N.K. Jeminsin, is a "sprawling urban fantasy" featuring characters from across the five boroughs, library officials said.

The book will be available as an e-book and audiobook download for anyone with an NYPL library card starting Tuesday through Labor Day.

"NYC's public libraries are an invaluable part of what makes this city great," Jemisin said. "I grew up hanging out in libraries, reading books with quiet joy every day. Now I'm honored to share that joy with all of you through the NYPL's Big Summer Book Club."

The NYPL's summer-long book club is being put on in partnership with The Public Theater, which will host a major event with the author at Delacorte Theater in Central Park on Aug. 17 to celebrate the citywide book club.
