Multiple Manholes Fires In Chelsea, FDNY Says

CHELSEA, NY — Sixty firefighters responded to multiple manhole fires with excessive smoking Tuesday morning, the FDNY said.

The Fire Department got a call about 7:30 a.m. regarding a manhole smoking at Seventh Ave. and 25th St. in Chelsea, a department spokesman said.

About 8:30 a.m., multiple manholes were smoking, the spokesman said.

The Fire Department posted on Twitter there were three to four manhole fires, and firefighters watered down steam pipes to put the situation under control by about 8:20 a.m.

Twelve units and 60 firefighters responded to the smoking intersection Tuesday morning, according to the spokesman.

No injuries have been reported.
