2 Hurt, 1 Seriously in Bohemia Crash, Holbrook Man Charged With DWI

Drunk driver rear-ended a minivan, causing it to crash into a guardrail and overturn, police say.

A Holbrook man is charged with DWI following an early Sunday morning crash in Bohemia that injured two people, police said.

According to police, James Hober, 59, was driving a 1999 Volkswagen east on Sunrise Highway, west of Locust Avenue, when his vehicle struck the rear of a 2005 Chevrolet minivan. The minivan then crashed into a guardrail and overturned, police said.

A passenger in the minivan, JoAnne Barbato, 49, of Centereach, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious head, chest and arm injuries, police said. The minivan’s driver, 51-year-old Richard Mascia, of Holbrook, was also transported to Southside for treatment of minor injuries.

Hober was not injured in the crash and was charged with DWI. He was due to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check. The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash and has not been interviewed to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
