The 2026-27 Commack School Budget Is Set For Approval. The Tax Cap Has Been Met.
Despite a decline of 1000 students over the past ten years and several dozen retirements, the contractual budget will rise by $4.5 million .
While the Commack district will receive 52 million in state aid ,which includes foundation aid for capital projects and to pay off bonds, they lost dollars in state aid because they get paid per student. Less students equals less per pupil state aid. Per Superintendent Cox, some of the cost increase is attributed to families that moved into Commack requiring special services, but no detail was provided as to what is different than in the past, as Commack has always been providing these types of services. The superintendent said they cut staff in Hubbs Administration with no detail provided. Elementary schools will maintain class size but reduce class sizes in the third and fifth grade. No secondary school programs will be reduced. All-inclusive playgrounds will be built on school grounds. Some roofs will be replaced as they were included in the bond projects. A parking lot replacement contract will be given out due to the effects of the hard winter.
School district taxpayers will be paying $162,000,000 to the school district but the tax levy will be just over two percent because they are using excess reserves to cover costs. The district board never mentions whether the rent they receive from several original school buildings covers maintenance costs. CCA member Art Reilly foiled many documents to get an answer to this question and it remained unanswered until his death.
The last budget meeting is on video on the school district website under Budget info.
