COMMACK, NY — Commack School District voters approved the district’s proposed $234,638,883 budget for the 2026-27 school year Tuesday, along with Proposition 2 and two Board of Education seats.
The budget passed 1,094-331.
District officials said the approved budget carries a 2.03 percent tax levy increase, matching the district’s allowable tax levy cap. The spending plan represents a 0.69 percent increase over the current year’s budget.
According to district budget documents, approximately 73.7 percent of spending supports program, teaching and learning expenses, including classroom instruction, transportation, special education services, classroom technology and student support services.
District officials said the budget maintains and enhances instructional programs while continuing support for small class sizes, mental health initiatives, athletics, music and arts programming, enrichment opportunities and districtwide technology upgrades.
The approved spending plan also includes several planned enhancements for the upcoming school year, including new “real life spaces” such as Discovery Dens, a Commack High School Living Lab, a School of Medicine Lab and a Visual Arts Lab. Additional initiatives include K-5 Digital Innovation Group Instruction Time, a new security vestibule at Commack Middle School, new inclusive playgrounds and additional touchscreen Chromebooks.
The district said the budget also reflects staffing adjustments designed to preserve student services while balancing expenses responsibly through retirements, attrition and restructuring across departments.
The approved revenue plan includes approximately $51.77 million in state aid. The district also anticipates using approximately $12.54 million in assigned fund balance and reserves to support the budget.
Proposition 2
Voters also approved Proposition 2, which authorized the district to use money from its capital reserve fund for district projects. The proposition passed 1,116-251.
Board Of Education Election
Voters also elected candidates to two Board of Education seats.
Dr. Bill Hender was elected to Trustee Seat 1 with 1,126 votes.
John Murray was elected to Trustee Seat 2 with 1,074 votes.
Hender, a longtime Commack resident and current trustee, has served on the board for the past nine years. He currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education in the South Huntington School District.
Murray, a retired Commack Middle School Lead Technology Teacher and former president of the Union of Commack’s Educators, campaigned on fiscal responsibility, mental health support and curriculum evaluation.
District officials said election results remain unofficial pending certification by the district clerk.
