Commack To Hold 9/11 Vigil On 25th Anniversary Of Attacks

COMMACK, NY — Sutton Landing Commack will hold a memorial vigil on Sept. 11 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, organizers said.

The remembrance program will begin at 8:46 a.m., marking the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center, and will be held in the community room at Sutton Landing Commack. The gathering is open to the public.

Steven Krieger, CEO of B2K Development, said the program is intended to bring residents and community members together to remember those killed in the attacks and reflect on the unity that followed.

"This remembrance program is open to all," Krieger said. "Our intent is to gather as a community at each of our Sutton Landing locations and remember that on 9/11, all Americans put aside their differences and stood united in the face of an attack on our nation and the freedoms we embrace."

Rabbi Joel Levenson of Midway Jewish Center, a former president of the Long Island Board of Rabbis, said communal gatherings can provide a place for Long Islanders to mourn and reflect on the anniversary.

"There will be many Long Islanders who will seek the comfort of a shared gathering to reflect, to mourn, and to remember," Levenson said. "By Sutton Landing communities opening their doors to all, that ability to join with others will allow many to find solace by standing with others to observe this tragic anniversary."

Pastor Bob Cederstrom of Christ Lutheran Church also reflected on the sense of unity that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks.

"In the days following 9/11 we gathered together as one, without regard to faith, ethnicity, or geography," Cederstrom said. "It enabled us to begin to heal by sharing our grief and our prayers. This thoughtful 'open house' at Sutton Landing allows us to continue on that path during this solemn anniversary."
