COMMACK, NY — Superheroes, storybook characters and a 1950s diner crew took over Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center as 100 residents and staff gathered for the facility's third annual Spooky Costume Parade on Oct. 28.
Hosted by Gurwin's Therapeutic Recreation Department, the Halloween celebration brought staff from across the facility together for a costume parade in the Simon Rainbow Room, where residents cheered on their caregivers and judged the costumes.
Minnie Mouse kicked off the parade, followed by the Dietary Department, whose staff dressed as a 1950s diner crew. The Human Resources team transformed into a Dunkin' drive-thru, while Social Work brought Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to life.
The Therapeutic Recreation Department embraced a farm theme featuring Old MacDonald, while Gurwin's physical, occupational and speech therapists dressed as superheroes, complete with masks and capes.
Members of the Gurwin Resident Council served as the official judges, awarding the Best Costumes honor to the Dietary Department's 1950s diner team. The winners received medals as residents and fellow staff members celebrated.
"Events like this bring laughter, spark memories and strengthen the connections that make Gurwin feel like family," said Nicole Hopper, chief therapeutic recreation officer. "Our residents get to see their caregivers in a playful new light, and staff from across departments come together to create something special. Every costume and every cheer helps make the celebration memorable for the people who call Gurwin home."
