Commack Man Arrested Under Leandra’s Law After SUV Crash: PD

Ryan McDonald, 33, suffered minor injuries; three children, who were inside his SUV, were not injured, police said.

COMMACK, NY — A 33-year-old Commack man was arrested under Leandra’s Law when Suffolk police say he was caught driving while intoxicated with his three children in the car after a crash in Commack on Wednesday night.

Police said that just after 7 p.m. Ryan McDonald was driving a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder northbound on Townline Road, just south of Old Northport Road, when it veered off the roadway and crashed into a large boulder.

McDonald’s three children, a six-month-old boy, a three-year-old boy, and a five-year-old girl, were in the backseat of the Sport-utility vehicle at the time, police said, adding that McDonald and the children were transported to a local hospital.

The children were not injured and were released to the custody of their mother at the hospital, according to police.

McDonald, who was determined to be intoxicated, was treated for “minor injuries,” police said.
McDonald was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger, driving while ability impaired by drugs, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

He is being held overnight at the 4th Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
