Commack Nursing Home Residents, Staff Protest Cuts to Medicaid Program

COMMACK, NY – Residents and staff at Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center recently protested the cuts to the Medicaid program.

The residents and staff used social media, snail mail and local news to protest cuts the program which was initially outlined in the Senate’s proposed American Health Care Act.

Gurwin staff rallied to write over 800 letters to Congressmen Peter King and Lee Zeldin stating that the cuts would have "devastating consequences" on those living in skilled nursing facilities.

Meanwhile Gurwin’s residents were interviewed by the local news channels, and participated in a #NoCutsNoCaps Twitter and Facebook campaign directed at legislators.

The social media campaign visually conveyed the residents’ objections to the $772 billion cuts proposed under the American Health Care Act.

In June, Senate Republicans released a bill that would eliminate penalties for those who don't buy insurance and cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid, the government program that provides health coverage for the the poorest of people, pregnant women, the elderly and the disabled.
