Commack Students Say “No” To Drugs and “Yes” to Healthy Living
Students of the Commack School District Celebrate Red Ribbon Week
COMMACK, NEW YORK — Students throughout the Commack School District celebrated Red Ribbon Week (October 23 – October 31) to encourage safe and drug free living. The students participated in daily themes and activities throughout the week that promoted a healthy lifestyle and general well-being of students.
To kick off Red Ribbon Week, students in grades K-2 wore red or pink hearts to represent their pledge to live healthy lives. Students were also asked to bring a healthy red snack, like an apple, to incorporate the theme during their lunch or snack time. On another day of the celebration, students wore comfy sweats to demonstrate that “Making good choices is no sweat!”
Meanwhile, at Commack Middle School, students participated in this year’s theme of Drug Free Looks Like Me by participating in an art contest sponsored by the Smithtown Youth Bureau, which had students create positive self-portraits during health class.

Red Ribbon Week was first celebrated in 1988 to promote awareness of the dangers of alcohol and drugs. Celebrated each year during the last week in October, the week highlights the critical role the whole community plays in helping youth steer clear of controlled substances. Today, the organization has devoted its efforts to the overall well-being of youth, as well as drug prevention, education and advocacy.
