Continuing Education: Keeping Yourself Entertained for Cheap

The Spring semester of Continuing Education classes at CHS begins soon. Find out why you should register, how to sign up, and how much fun the classes were last semester.

Are you bored out of your mind and looking for something relatively inexpensive to do?  Are you interested in learning something new, or expanding upon an interest you already have?  Do you just want to take a single exercise class without paying an exorbitant gym membership fee?

I found myself in those very same predicaments just a couple of months ago.  That’s when I found the Continuing Education program at .  At first, I was all like, “Those classes are for old people like my grandma who have nothing better to do…” But then it hit me; I had nothing better to do.

CHS actually offers a wide variety of interesting classes to take.  They have everything from acrylic painting, international cuisine and cake decorating to basic introduction to PC computer programs, Mandarin Chinese, cardio kickboxing, dog obedience training and even something called Pickleball (though I’m still not quite sure what it is).

Their awesome selection of courses makes it difficult to choose just one—that’s why I registered for two.

As a dancer and an alumnus of the Binghamton Ballroom Dance Team, an obvious choice of class for me was Mila Balaguia and John Havlik’s Intermediate Ballroom Dancing class.  (Those two teach classes at as well.)  Fall semester we learned steps from the Foxtrot, Cha Cha, and Tango; this spring they are teaching the Salsa, Waltz, and West Coast Swing.

If you have any coordination whatsoever I would highly recommend taking this class—the price is an absolute steal in terms of ballroom lessons and you actually learn new steps every week.  Though the class was all paired up in husband and wife couples—except for myself, and no one was really anywhere near my age—it was still a blast. If you’re timid, just register for the beginner class they offer (oh, and drag your husband or boyfriend along as your dance partner for a good laugh.)

I also registered for the Vinyasa Yoga class, which for you non-Yogis out there is basically just moving through poses and postures while focusing on your breathing and balance.  For every move, the teacher shows both advanced and modified positions, which is fabulous since every participant, regardless of what level they are, feels satisifed in the clas.

So what are you waiting for?  Go sign yourself up, silly.

In-house registration for the Spring Semester of Continuing Education classes begins soon.  Check out the attached PDF to check out CHS’ course catalogue and pick the perfect class for you.  Then, drop by Commack High School sometime between January 27th and February 1st from 7-8pm to register for your courses.  Don’t forget to bring a separate check for each class you plan to register for.
