Cops: Bay Shore Man Busted in Melville Street Race
Between 60 and 70 cars were gathered at Melville Park Road Sunday night as the drivers of two autos were preparing to race, police said.

A Bay Shore man was arrested in Melville for an unauthorized speed contest and fleeing a police officer Sunday night, authorities said.
Suffolk Police say Officer Jesus Faya responded to Melville Park Road in Melville at about 11:15 p.m., where he saw between 60 and 70 cars gathered along the road, with drivers of two of the autos preparing to race. The spectators fled when police arrived.
Faya stopped one of the racers, Fernando Romero-Alvarado, 35, of Bay Shore, near Maxess Road, police said.

Romero-Alvarado was arrested and charged with unauthorized speed contest, reckless driving and third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a vehicle. Police impounded the 1996 green Honda Civic that Romero-Alvarado was driving, officials said.
Romero-Alvarado was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
