Scam Alert: Conmen Prey On 87-Year-Old Woman, Charge Her $2,200 For Driveway Resealing

A Long Island grandmother was putting out her garbage when she was scammed by two men who told her they would reseal her driveway.

COMMACK, NY - A Long Island woman is warning local residents of a scam after her 87-year-old grandmother was recently ripped off by two men.

According to the Kim Kaler, on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at about 1 p.m., a man driving a white van saw her grandmother outside putting out the garbage and told her that he was the guy who resurfaced her driveway last year.

He said, "You know me," and when she told him she did not remember him, he insisted that she did.

He then proceeded to tell her that he would take care of the cracks in her driveway and clean her gutters.

When Kaler's grandmother asked him how much it would be, he told her, "Don't worry."

He called his "brother" who pulled up shortly after in a nice red pickup truck and proceeded to spray the driveway. Once the job was done, he came to the door and at first told her that she owed him $5,500 for the job.

According to Kaler, the man then said, "No, I'm only kidding, it's $2,200" and her grandmother wrote him a check for that amount. However, the work was definitely not worth that much.

The work was probably worth more like $175, according to Kaler.

The family called the police and filed a report and while they were able to stop payment, he's still trying to deposit the check.

"Cameras are being installed as we speak, but everyone needs to be very careful of this conman team," she told Patch.
