Smithtown School Enrollment Drops By 2,000 Students Over the Past Decade

West Islip lost 693 students over the last decade, a 13.6% decline, while enrollment fell 17.4%, or 777 students. Sachem school district

recorded a 14.8% drop in enrollment from 13,562 students in 2016 to 11,553 in 2025.

Federal projections estimate public school enrollment will continue to fall through 2031, with US public schools expected to lose nearly 4 million students compared with 2019 levels. Experts note those projections were made before the Trump administration's immigration restrictions, which could further reduce enrollment in some communities.
