Sundaes Equals Success For Math Honor Society
The parents of the Commack High School's Math Honor Society try to save the club from budget cuts by holding a fundraiser at Friendly's.
The parents of the Commack Math Honor Society held a fundraising drive at Friendly's on Indian Head Road on Monday to raise funds for its upcoming year. The restaurant donated ten percent of the proceeds between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to the society, which equaled approximately $300 dollars.
General manager, Joe LaPadula voiced his support for the Math Honor Society and other community organizations in the past, and said it is a win-win for both the people of Commack and his own business.
"We do this for everybody, whoever wants to do it," he said. "It actually helps us and helps your organizations out."

Budget cuts in the district eliminated funding for the honor society, but the students decided to press on with their own efforts to make sure this club gets the financial resources it needs.
The district had a deficit of $9 million dollars, and saved approximately $1,600 dollars with the cut to the society. The parents began fundraising after this cut was announced.

Marni Wasserman, Erica Portnoy, Scott Aronin, and Sonal Nanda, were on hand to help give their money and appetite to the cause. These students also voiced their opinions on Patch.
"The Math Honor society provides tutoring and assists teachers at extra help services. The extra help sessions have between 25-30 students, and they have us to provide answers to specific questions," Aronin said.
The fundraiser brought in crowds of people who enjoyed not only the sundaes, but sampled their dinner entrees as well, further contributing funds to the society. At the end of the school year any extra funds the students can raise will be donated.
