Woman Killed In Jericho Turnpike Crash After Husband Swerves To Avoid Turning Ambulance

She died after her husband swerved to avoid a turning ambulance and crashed head-on into another car, police say.

COMMACK, NY – A 77-year-old woman was killed in a two-car crash on Jericho Turnpike in Commack Wednesday afternoon, Suffolk Police said.

According to police, 82-year-old Gerald Weintraub was driving 2003 Honda east on Jericho Turnpike when he attempted to avoid striking an ambulance that was making a left turn into driveway before the intersection of Wiltshire Drive at about 2 p.m.

Weintraub, of Melville, swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into a westbound 2013 BMW.

Weintraub's wife, 77-year-old Barbara Weintraub, was transported by Commack Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Gerald Weintraub was taken to Southside Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The driver of the BMW, 52-year-old Serap Sezer, of Deer Park, was transported to Huntington Hospital with minor injuries.

Police did not say if the ambulance that Weintraub swerved to avoid was responding to an emergency call or specify who owns the ambulance.
