Women Of Valor Honored At Suffolk Y JCC Event In Commack
The annual Women's History Month celebration in Commack recognized Rebecca Sanin and other local women for their community impact.
COMMACK, NY — The Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center marked Women’s History Month by honoring a group of women whose leadership and service continue to shape communities across Long Island.
More than 100 residents, community leaders, and supporters gathered March 9 for the organization’s annual Women of Valor (Eshet Chayil) celebration, an event recognizing women whose compassion, volunteerism, and dedication have made a meaningful local impact.
Among the honorees was Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin, who was recognized for her dedication to public service and her commitment to strengthening the local community. Through her work in the Suffolk County Legislature, Sanin continues to advocate for families, community programs, and initiatives that support residents throughout the region.

“When we hear the word valor, we often picture heroic moments—acts of dramatic bravery,” said Legislator Rebecca Sanin. “But I’ve come to believe that valor is often something much more human, and much closer to our daily lives. Valor can be choosing kindness when it would be easier to look away. It can be standing up for someone whose voice isn’t being heard. And sometimes, valor is the quiet strength of not listening to the noise—of not getting distracted by the narratives others try to write for us.”
Among the honorees were Master Baker Janet Ben-Ami and her team, as well as Phyllis Gross, Gail Paloscio, and Mary Ann Vicchiullo of the Women’s Club, who were recognized for their generosity, leadership, and ongoing dedication to community service.

The afternoon celebration included a reception and recognition ceremony attended by Suffolk Y JCC members, community leaders, and local residents who gathered to celebrate the honorees and their contributions and impact. The program also featured a welcome video set to music celebrating Women of Valor and an uplifting musical performance by the Suffolk Y JCC’s AV Technical Director, Sid Cherry.
The annual Women of Valor celebration reflects the ongoing mission of the Suffolk Y JCC to recognize individuals who inspire others through leadership, compassion, and service while strengthening connections throughout the Long Island community.
“The Women of Valor celebration is a meaningful opportunity for us to recognize extraordinary women whose compassion and leadership inspire our community every day,” said Rick Lewis, CEO of the Suffolk Y JCC. “Their dedication to service reminds us of the powerful impact individuals can have when they give back and uplift others.”
