The approved spending plan represents a 2.8 percent increase over the current year’s $121,200,495 budget and includes a 1 percent tax levy increase. District officials said the budget remains within the district’s tax levy cap.

District officials said the budget was developed to expand student opportunities while remaining mindful of taxpayers.

The budget includes the opening of a new cosmetology program, designed to provide hands-on, career-ready learning experiences for students. It also adds two Advanced Placement courses, AP Personal Finance and AP Seminar, and increases access to music lessons during the school day.

The spending plan also expands the district’s bilingual homeroom program to grade 6 and strengthens the district’s homebound transition program, Beyond the Bell, to help students remain in their home schools whenever possible.

Student engagement beyond the classroom is also included in the budget, with new athletic opportunities such as middle school softball, a golf team, junior varsity girls soccer and competitive cheer. The district also plans to offer a summer band camp.

District officials said Wyandanch no longer has any schools on the New York State Education Department’s targeted list, which they said reflects progress in improving academic outcomes. The district also highlighted a recent Standard & Poor’s Global Ratings upgrade to A+.

According to district budget documents, the approved budget includes $91,540,382 for program costs, $18,070,060 for capital costs and $14,995,223 for administrative costs.

Revenue projections include $94,562,907 from state sources, $23,569,441 from real property taxes, $1,422,802 from payments in lieu of taxes, $1,670,015 from other local revenue, $130,500 from federal sources and $3.25 million in appropriated fund balance.

The budget also includes an interfund transfer to capital projects, including $3.8 million to replace interior doors districtwide, approximately $460,000 to support the district’s food service program and approximately $590,000 to support the extended-year program for students with disabilities.

Board Of Education Election

Voters also elected two trustees to the Board of Education.

Brian L. Cole received 166 votes, defeating incumbent trustee Jarod B. Morris, who received 120 votes.

Cindy Paschall won the open seat held by trustee Latesha S. Walker, who did not seek re-election. Paschall received 88 votes.

Nancy Holliday received 77 votes, Jerlyn Braswell received 75 votes, Sefora X. Lopez received 55 votes and Jose W. Corea received 14 votes.

District officials said election results remain unofficial pending certification by the district clerk.
