ISLANDIA, NY — A Wyandanch man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison for shooting a man twice outside Jake’s 58 Casino in 2024, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney’s office said.
Nashawn J. Legros, 26, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty in February to second-degree attempted murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said that on May 31, 2024, at about 10:16 p.m., the victim was walking through the parking lot on his way into Jake’s 58 Casino when Legros fired two shots directly at him, striking him twice.
The victim was able to get up and make it inside the casino with assistance before collapsing, prosecutors said. Legros fled in a vehicle, which he later abandoned in Central Islip, prosecutors said.
The victim suffered two gunshot wounds, prosecutors said. One bullet entered his chest and traveled through his body cavity, striking multiple organs, including his intestines, colon and diaphragm, prosecutors said.
Surgeons used more than 40 staples to repair the damage, and later procedures were performed to remove fluid around the victim’s heart and lungs, prosecutors said. One bullet remains lodged in his pelvic bone, prosecutors said.
Legros pleaded guilty on Feb. 25 before Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro to second-degree attempted murder, a violent felony, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, prosecutors said.
Legros was represented by Chris Gioe, who was not immediately available to comment.
“This brazen act of violence has no place in Suffolk County,” Tierney said. “My office is committed to holding violent offenders accountable. That message should be clear from this sentence as the defendant will now spend a decade in prison for this violent attack in a public place.”
