SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A reported Bloods gang member pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a gun this week after he was pulled over by Suffolk County police in January for distracted driving. According to authorities, the man was out on bail for an attempted murder charge when the traffic stop took place.

Floyd McNeil, 26, of Wheatley Heights, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to a release from the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

"The fact that this defendant, an alleged gang member and one that was out on bail for attempted murder charge no less, thought he could drive around in Suffolk County with a loaded handgun is beyond brazen,” District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a statement.

According to authorities, McNeil was pulled over by Suffolk County police on Jan. 25 shortly before 12:15 p.m. Police said McNeil was looking at his cell phone while driving on Straight Path in Wyandanch.

During the stop, police said McNeil seemed "extremely nervous" after adjusting an object beneath his jacket. After officers asked him to get out of the car, McNeil complied but immediately tried to flee, according to authorities.

Police caught up with him and placed him under arrest, according to authorities. Once in custody, McNeil told officers he had a gun on his person. Police recovered the loaded, defaced semi-automatic pistol from a fanny pack around McNeil's chest, authorities said.

"This defendant is a prior violent felony offender with a dangerous criminal past," Tierney said. "He remains in custody and will no longer pose a danger to Suffolk County residents."

According to the Suffolk County district attorney, McNeil was previously released from jail on bail after he was indicted for attempted murder in Nassau County. While in custody following the traffic stop, McNeil was again indicted in Nassau County for a 2020 murder, authorities said.

McNeil was previously convicted of robbery and criminal possession of a weapon and sentenced to serve five years in prison followed by three years of supervised release, according to authorities.
