This year's Long Island Reads selection is Sutton by J.R. Moehringer, author of the critically acclaimed The Tender Bar. It's an engrossing fictional account of Willie “The Actor” Sutton.
It’s Christmas Eve in 1969, and the notorious bank robber is released from prison for the last time after seventeen long years. He grants his exclusive story to one journalist, and on Christmas Day they embark on a tour of places that proved pivotal in Sutton’s personal life and criminal career. This journey is intertwined with the story of Sutton’s impoverished childhood, petty thievery, imprisonments and his love of one woman for whom he’d do anything (even rob her father’s business). While the journalist is anxious to get to the location where the unfortunate “snitch” Arnold Schuster was assassinated, Sutton slowly relives his life, mistakes and regrets in such an impassioned way that it will certainly keep you turning the pages.
Join us at the Deer Park Library for a discussion of Sutton on Monday, April 15th at 7pm. Call us at (631) 586-3000 to register.
