Deer Park Army Veteran Named Woman Veteran Of Distinction

Wynette Bates was recognized for her military service, advocacy for women veterans and volunteer work at the Northport VA Medical Center.

DEER PARK, NY — Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly honored Wynette Bates of Deer Park during the Legislature’s general meeting on June 23 in Hauppauge. Donnelly highlighted her military service and community involvement, and presented her with an official county proclamation.

Bates enlisted in the United States Army in July 1979. After completing basic training, she was awarded the military occupational specialty of petroleum supply specialist, a role in which she helped ensure military vehicles and aircraft received the fuel needed to support safe and effective operations.

Although her military service was cut short by a medical hardship, Bates remained committed to supporting fellow veterans.

Today, Bates is actively involved with the Northport VA Medical Center, where she participates in women veterans’ groups and volunteers in the indigent clothing room. Her work helps veterans transitioning from treatment programs obtain clothing and basic household necessities.

She is also an active member of MWSOA, Inc., which advocates on behalf of women veterans. In Deer Park, Bates organizes and hosts weekly bingo gatherings for seniors and fellow residents, continuing her commitment to community service.

Woman Veterans Appreciation Day was established by Suffolk County Resolution No. 94-2020 to honor the achievements and sacrifices of women who have served in the Armed Forces. Each Suffolk County legislator selects one woman veteran from their district to be recognized as part of the observance.

“I am honored to recognize Wynette Bates for her service to our nation and her unwavering commitment to fellow veterans,” Donnelly said. “Through her volunteer work, advocacy and community involvement, she continues to be a role model and make a positive difference in the lives of others. She is truly deserving of this recognition.”
