Deer Park Freshman Named All-State, Honored By School Board

DEER PARK, NY — The Deer Park Board of Education welcomed a new student member and recognized a standout athlete and longtime educator during its Sept. 22 meeting.

Deer Park High School Senior Class President Gabrielle Braun officially joined the board as an ex officio student member.

The uncompensated, nonvoting position, required under New York State law, allows high school students to offer their perspectives on district issues and participate in board discussions in an advisory capacity.

The board also recognized Deer Park High School ninth grader Christian Myrick for his accomplishments on the football field.

During his freshman season, Myrick recorded 825 yards of total offense and 12 touchdowns, including 416 rushing yards and 396 receiving yards, according to the district.

He earned All-County honors and was the only freshman selected to the All-State team, the district said. Myrick was also selected for the USA Football 15U Boys Junior National Flag Football Team and competed in the 2026 USA Football Junior International Cup in Los Angeles.

“This young man is just a special talent,” Superintendent Jim Cummings said. “Deer Park is very proud of him.”

Deer Park High School teacher and Patriot Club co-adviser Joseph Alo was also honored after receiving the Americanism Community Partnership Award from American Legion Post 1634.

Board of Education President Donna Marie Elliott recognized Alo for his work with students and his commitment to honoring the Deer Park community and its values.
