Deer Park HS Science Olympiad Team Earns Regional Medals
The earned 26th place overall at the recent Eastern Long Island Regional Competition.

In their second year of participation, Deer Park High School’s Science Olympiad Team earned several medals at the recent Eastern Long Island Regional Competition. After being motivated by earning two medals at last year’s competition, the team doubled their medals and earned 26th place overall, a huge jump from last year.

The 2020-201 Deer Park team consisted of 13 students who competed against 43 other teams from Suffolk County in various events including anatomy, astronomy, circuits, fossils, machines and ornithology. Sonam Kataria and Gabriel Villacres medaled in the astronomy event by placing seventh, while and Jimmy Jiang and Nicholas Stamatakis medaled in the circuit lab event by placing sixth.
“Despite this being an unconventional year, our students worked hard and really helped boost our rankings for Science Olympiad,” said team adviser Kevin Richards. “I have a great group of hardworking kids and am so proud of each and every one of them. The students are already planning for next year and look forward to making their third year their best yet.”
