DEER PARK, NY — Deer Park High School junior Joseph Reina was recently selected to receive the Rensselaer Medal, a prestigious award recognizing exceptional academic achievement in math and science.

The award, established by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, encourages students to pursue studies and careers in science, engineering and technology, according to the district.

RPI, founded in 1824, is the oldest technological institution in North America. The Rensselaer Medal carries a merit scholarship valued at $200,000 for recipients who apply to, are accepted by and enroll at the university.

“Joseph is an outstanding student who excels in math and science,” school counselor Noel Skelton said. “We are excited to recommend him for the Rensselaer Medal and scholarship.”
